Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time can feel a bit like walking onto the set of an action movie where you don't know your lines. Your heart is racing, you’re worried about looking "clueless," and you’re wondering if everyone is going to tackle you the moment you step through the door.

Relax. At AOS BJJ, we’ve all been the "new person." To help settle those nerves, here is exactly what you can expect during your first 60 minutes on the mats in KL.

1. The Warm-Up (But Not as You Know It)

We don’t just do jumping jacks. Our warm-ups are designed to teach you how to move like a grappler. You’ll learn the "shrimp" (a hip-escape movement), the "technical stand-up," and how to break-fall safely.

  • Pro Tip: Don't worry if you feel like a clumsy seal during the floor drills. It takes everyone a few weeks to get the coordination down!

2. Technical Instruction

This is the "learning" portion of the class. The professor will demonstrate a specific technique—like a sweep, a guard pass, or a submission—on a partner. Then, you’ll pair up with someone (usually a friendly higher belt who can help guide you) to practice that move repeatedly.

3. Positional sparring

Before we get to "live" rolling, we often do positional sparring. This is where you practice the move you just learned against a partner who is providing a little bit of resistance. It’s the bridge between "learning the move" and "using the move."

4. The "Roll" (Sparring)

At the end of class, students "roll." This is live grappling. As a total beginner, you might you'll probably stick with positional sparring. , or you’ll be paired with an experienced student who will move slowly and help you stay safe.

  • The Golden Rule: If you feel stuck or something hurts, just "tap" (pat your partner or the mat). The round stops immediately. It’s all about safety and learning.

Your First Day "Survival" Checklist

To make sure you're prepared, here is what you need to bring to the academy:

Item

Why You Need It

Water Bottle

You are going to sweat. A lot. Stay hydrated!

Comfortable Clothes

If you don't have a Gi yet, wear a tight-fitting T-shirt or rash guard and athletic shorts/leggings.

Trimmed Nails

Long nails can scratch your training partners. Keep them short!

A Positive Ego

You’re going to get "tapped out." It’s part of the process. Leave the ego at the door and enjoy the ride.

Common Beginner Questions

  • "Do I need to be in shape first?" No! That’s like saying you need to be a pro driver before taking driving lessons. BJJ is how you get in shape.

  • "Will I get hurt?" Safety is our #1 priority. We emphasize technique over brute force. You are in control of when you "tap."

  • "What if I’m not 'tough'?" BJJ isn't for "tough" people; it's for people who want to become more capable. Most of our members are regular professionals just like you.
